Mobile Scotland 2014, hosted by TotalMobile, spotlights how Scotland is leading the field in mobile working strategies, designed to enhance public sector service delivery throughout the country within local government, social care and health care.
Scotland has rapidly adopted mobile working in the public sector, driven by the desire to enhance services, reduce administration and travel time and provide better communication to towns and cities, as well as to the more sparsely populated highlands. However, these have tended to be ad hoc and within individual service areas. Even so, these implementations have enabled Scottish councils to make major cost savings. Aberdeen City Council, for example, has saved a staggering £1.5 million annually by introducing mobile working in just one department. At the same time it has increased productivity, improved asset management, customer service and employer profile. According to the ‘Reducing the Demand for Travel: Mobile & Flexible Working Programmes’ report published by the Scottish Government in 2013 – around 24% of Aberdeen’s Council staff will work in a remote/flexible manner by 2016.
To realise the full benefits that mobile IT can bring, it is important to take an enterprise-wide approach. Fife Council, the third largest local authority in the country, is doing exactly this and is four years into a five year programme to increase efficiency and improve service delivery to 366,000 citizens, setting itself am ambitious target of realising efficiencies of £20 million within the timeframe. The Council is very much on track to do this by adopting a mobile and flexible work programme.
Fife Council has a dedicated team in place to set-up, deliver, manage and promote their ongoing mobile working initiative. Charlie Anderson head of ICT at Fife Council and a committee member of the Society of Information Technology Management (Socitm) will provide insight at Mobile Scotland 2014 on what should be considered to create a successful mobile strategy. Dumfries and Galloway Council will also be presenting on their experiences in implementing a mobile workforce.
