What is data doing to us? In simple – stressing us out.

It has never been easier to access information – we live in the digital era – during the rise of the millennials. As individuals we find all our information on Google – who needs learning when you have a handy search engine that provides you with all the answers in a split second? Can you do long division? Why would you be able to – when you can simply look it up!

But with the bombardment of information and data, both in our personal and professional lives, it is becoming increasingly difficult to switch off from it. We are now part of a culture that is constantly plugged in, this has seen a rise in Information Fatigue Syndrome (IFS). According to Miller’s Law our brains can only retain 7 pieces of information, give or take. But with the rising digital noise we are receiving more and more information, with technology being the main culprit. Instead of a help it is becoming more of a hindrance to our productivity. Employees spend up 28% of their time on emails, not to mention taking these home as devices make it easier to access emails anywhere, anytime.

It isn’t without justification, there has been 35% increase in ransomware since 2015.

There has been terrible headlines highlighting the loss of data or hackers obtaining personal information but how can we solely blame organisations for the loss of data when we are storing more and more passwords and bank details on our phones because of the belief that they are “fingerprint protected”.
